Who Says You’re Dead? by Jacob M. AppelWho Says You're Dead? Medical & Ethical Dilemmas for the Curious & Concerned by Jacob M. Appel
Published by Algonquin Books on October 8, 2019

Drawing upon the author’s two decades of teaching medical ethics at America’s top universities and medical schools and his work as a practicing psychiatrist, this innovative book asks readers, when faced with complex, unsettling scenarios readers, What would you do? Some cases are pulled from today’s headlines, others are loosely based on cases reported in professional journals. A few (identities disguised) come from the author’s own clinical encounters.  Every scenario is followed by a brief reflection of how various modern thought leaders (ethicists, philosophers, courts, political commentators, research scientists, and medical professionals) have addressed the underlying issues.

Leann’s Thoughts

Who Says You're Dead?Very thought-provoking book on medical ethics: one that kept me thinking about it long after I closed the covers. I love the mix of medicine and story with an emotional kick! Technology gives us hope but it also places an odd burden on those who administer and those who receive its gifts.
As each chapter is short, this would be a great book to use as a discussion topic at an otherwise boring dinner party. The stories are memorable and jarring, leaving me to wonder whatever happened to these folks later on.
This is a great book for those who love nonfiction but want more of a story or those fiction lovers who want to try a taste of nonfiction.
Very entertaining and emotionally gripping: highly recommended!
